Can 5G Replace the Cables, WiFi or Broadband Internet

One of the biggest hype in the telecom market currently is the introduction of the 5G network. This network has the capacity to operate in high-frequency bandwidth in between 30 to 300GHz.

Also, the 5G technology due to its high frequency has the capacity to transfer data at high speed. It is said that the 5G network can replace the current broadband technology. Although, even after the 5G network has more speed, but the vital question is whether 5G can replace cables, broadband, and wireless networks.

About 5G Mobile Network Technology

The 5th generation of mobile networks or 5G is the new technology that provides faster speeds, reliable connectivity than the currently available 4G network. The average download speed for the 5G networks is around one GBps, which is much faster than any existing mobile networks.

Due to the good speed and a rise in various internet-enabled devices this technology will become one of the most sought after. By the year 2020, the 5G technology is expected to be launched to the world, which will be alongside the existing other mobile networks like 3G, 4G and etc.

What is Wired Broadband Internet?

Wired broadband is the technology that we all use at our home to access the internet using a cable. Basically, a wired broadband connection is the physical connection between a network you have and the Internet Service Provider network. There are three types of wires using which you can establish the physical connection which are as follows – “DSL”, “coaxial cables” and the “fiber optics wires”. Among these three types of physical connections, the fiber optics cable can send data at the highest speed.’

Advantages of Wired Broadband Connections

There are many advantages of wired connections. Some of them are discussed below.

  • Security and Safety – As the wired broadband connection physically connects one device to the internet via a wire, therefore, there is no problem of data theft. However, in the wireless network, since multiple devices connect to the same network remotely, thus hackers can tinker with the security and access the data.
  • Fast Download Speed – The download speed is the rate at which the data gets transferred from the Internet to the computer. This rate of data transfer is pretty high for the wired broadband connections, thus they are preferred more rather than wireless connections. Most of the organizations and residents take the wired broadband connection instead of the wireless one.
  • Less Interference – One of the biggest problems of the wireless connection is the interference problem. If your neighbor has a wireless connection present, then it can cause an interruption in your network. This interference problem is not present with the wired connection, so there will be unhindered internet connectivity.

Will 5G Replace the Broadband Connection?

As we have seen that there are many benefits of the 5G mobile networks over the wired broadband connection. But even then there is no possibility of the fact that the 5G network will completely replace the broadband connection. Some of those factors are given below.

Flexible Services and Compatibility of Devices

With the broadband connection, all the users can get internet connectivity via both the wired and wireless connections provided there is a presence of the router device. Thus, one can connect to the internet via desktop computers and even smartphones when there is broadband connectivity. Even the broadband connections have plenty of plans to choose from, so there is service flexibility. However, in the case of a 5G network or any mobile network, there are choices of subscription plans, cellular networks, and service options.

Time Range and Costing

Since the 5G technology is a new mobile network. Therefore the range of time for it to become fully functional will be more. Also, as the 5G technology is brand new, therefore the cost to set it up will also be huge. As a result, this mobile network will not be adopted by the people over the wired broadband connection.

Coverage

As the signal of the 5G technology does not cover large distances. Therefore, the crucial problem of this mobile network is the coverage. In order to provide the signal, the telecom companies will have to install a lot of distributed antenna systems (DAS). These DAS have the capability to amplify the 5G network signal.

5G technology will help Rural People to Acess Internet

Since the rural areas do not have the wired broadband connectivity still now. Therefore the introduction of a 5G mobile network will help the people to connect to the internet easily. As a result of that everyone will have access to the internet.
