Easily Fix the Outlook Keeps Asking for Password Problem

Microsoft Outlook is an application that is used mostly as a platform to look and send emails. Almost all the offices use this email client for communicating with their employees. Due to the easy user interface along with the good security protocols, Outlook has become one of the most sought after application in the market.

However, even if Outlook is a good email client, but it still faces some unusual problems which can disrupt normal usage. One error about which you will get a discussion here is the ‘Outlook keeps asking for password’ problem.

You can get this problem even after providing the correct credentials to log into the Microsoft Outlook application.

You will get the causes for the Microsoft Outlook keeps asking for password error here. 

  • If the credentials settings of the Outlook application is not set correctly, then this problem might appear.
  • When the login settings of Outlook software are also set properly then you can encounter this issue.
  • Whenever the cached passwords present within the computer are not correct, then the Outlook can ask for the password regularly.
  • If the Outlook application is not up to date then there is a chance for you to get this problem.
  • Sometimes the Add-ins present within the Microsoft Outlook application can trigger this glitch also.

How to fix the Outlook keeps asking for password Issue?

Here, there will be methods that will help you to rectify this problem easily.

1: Inspect the Credential Settings

If the credential settings of the Outlook application are not verified correctly then you can get this error. In other words, if the ‘Prompt for credentials’ option within the profile is not checked then for that reason you might get this problem. To do it follow the steps below.

  • Launch the Outlook application from the Desktop.
  • After that, go to the menu bar and choose the ‘File’ item. This action will reveal a drop-down menu with several options.
  • Now, out of all the options choose the one that says ‘Account settings’ from the section having the same name.
  • As soon as you click on that option, then a new dialog box with the name ‘Account Settings’ will come up.
  • Inside that dialog box, locate the account that you have and then tap on the ‘Change’ button. Now, another dialog box will appear with the title ‘Change Account’.
  • Within this dialog box, go to the bottom right corner and click on the ‘More Settings…’ button.
  • Next, locate and choose the ‘Security’ tab. Under this tab, go to the user identification section and put a checkmark on the ‘Always prompt for logon credentials’ option.
  • Finally, choose the ‘OK’ button and start the Outlook application once again.

2: Delete Cached Passwords

If the cached passwords of the Outlook account have got corrupted somehow, then there is a possibility for you get this problem. Now, the best answer to get rid of this issue is to delete the cached passwords from the Control Panel. For that to happen, follow the steps below. 

  • First, click on the ‘magnifying glass’ on the taskbar beside the ‘Windows’ logo. This action will open the default search area.
  • Inside that area, type in the following text ‘control panel’, then from the results section find and tap on the ‘Control Panel’ option.
  • As this option is chosen then a new window having ‘Control Panel’ as the title will come up. In that window, find and choose the setting category ‘User Accounts’.
  • Next, a new page will come up, in it, click on the ‘User Accounts’ option from the list.
  • Now, yet another page will appear, in it, navigate to the left pane and choose the ‘Manage your credentials’ link.
  • As soon as you click on that link, then again a new page will appear having the name ‘Credential Manager’. Within this page, under both ‘Windows and Generic Credentials’, choose the following credentials of ’Lync’, ‘Microsoft’ and ‘Outlook’.
  • For each of the credentials mentioned above tap on the ‘Details’ link and then hit ‘Remove from Vault’.
  • Once all the cached passwords are deleted, next, close ‘Control Panel’ and reboot the computer.

3: Disable the Outlook Add-ins

Sometimes the ‘Add-ins’ of the Outlook application can give you this error. The only way to resolve this problem is to deactivate all the ‘Add-ins’ of the Outlook application. However, in order to do this, you will have to launch the Outlook in safe mode. When Outlook is opened in safe mode, next, it launches with no ‘Add-ins’ or any other custom settings of the toolbar. In order to disable the ‘Add-ins’, follow the steps below.

  • First, press the ‘Ctrl’ key and double-click on the ‘Microsoft Outlook’ icon from the Desktop. This action will open the Outlook application in safe mode.
  • Inside the Outlook application window navigate to the menubar and then click on the ‘File’ item. As you tap on that item, then a drop-down list will come up.
  • From that list, locate and tap on ‘Options’. After that, a new dialog box with the name ‘Outlook Options’ will come up.
  • In that dialog box go to the left pane and then click on the ‘Add-Ins’ option. Now, a new popup window will come up, where you will get all the add-ins installed within the Outlook application on a list.
  • From that list find the add-in that you want to delete and click on the same. Next, another small window will appear, in it, tap on the ‘Remove’ button.
  • Repeat the above step for all the other add-ins, that you want to delete.
  • Every time when you delete an add-in from the Outlook application then restart the computer and see if this error comes up or not.

4: Activate the Remember Password Option

You can get the ‘Outlook asking for password again and again’ error if the “Remember Password” option is not enabled. The easiest solution to getting rid of this problem is to simply activate the “Remember Password” option. Here you will get the steps on how to do it.

  • First, open the ‘Outlook’ application and then click on the ‘File’ item from the menu bar. As soon as you click on that item, then a dropdown list will appear, in it, tap on the ‘Account Settings’.
  • Now, a new ‘Account Settings’ dialog box will appear, in it, select the ‘Email’ tab. Under this tab, click on your account and then tap the ‘Change’ button.
  • At this time, a new ‘Change Account’ dialog box will come up. Inside that dialog box, go to the ‘Logon Information’ section and then put a checkmark on the ‘Remember password’ option.
  • At last, restart the computer and then open the Outlook application and see if it asks to provide the password or not.

5: Creation of New Profile

If your Outlook profile is corrupt due to some reason, then you can get this problem. The best way to resolve this problem is to create a new profile. The steps on how to do it are as follows.

  • First, if the Outlook is open, then close it.
  • Next, press the combination of ‘Windows + R’ keys together to open the ‘Run’ dialog box.
  • Within that dialog box, input the following ‘control panel’ beside the ‘Open’ label and then tap on the ‘OK’ button.
  • This action will open a new window having the name ‘Control Panel’. Inside that window, go to the top-right corner and then choose ‘Large icons’ option for the ‘View by:’ field.
  • After that, from the list of all the settings categories choose the one that says ‘Mail’. Once you click on that category, next, a new dialog box will appear having the title ‘Mail Setup – Outlook’ will come up.
  • Within that dialog box, navigate to the ‘Profiles’ section and then click on the ‘Show Profiles..’ button. Next, tap on the ‘Add’ button.
  • Now, enter the name for the new profile and then click ‘OK’ button. Next, provide the email address and your name on the correct fields and then tap on the ‘Next’ and ‘Finish buttons respectively.
  • Lastly from the ‘Mail’ dialog box select the ‘Always use this profile’ option. This will open a new ‘Always use this profile’ dialog box, where choose the newly created profile and then tap on ‘OK’.

6: Enable NTLM Authentication Option within Outlook Anywhere Feature

There is a feature within Outlook application known as ‘Outlook Anywhere’. This feature lets you access your account remotely outside the office. However, in order to use the ‘Outlook Anywhere’ feature, you need to enable the NTLM Authentication option. You need to follow the steps below to activate the ‘NTLM Authentication’ option.

  • Go to the first method and then follow the six initial steps until the ‘More Settings’ dialog box comes up.
  • Inside that dialog box, choose the ‘Connection’ tab. Inside that tab, locate and tap on the ‘Exchange Proxy settings’ button, under the section ‘Proxy authentication settings’.
  • At last, choose the ‘NTLM Authentication’ option to activate the same.

7: Procedure to Update the Outlook Application

When not a single method can solve the ‘Outlook keeps asking for password even though it is correct’ issue, next as the last solution perform an Outlook application update. To do it, follow the steps below.

  • First, launch the Outlook application and then tap on the ‘File’, to reveal various options on the drop-down menu.
  • Next, from that menu locate and click on the ‘About Outlook’ option. As soon as you tap on that option, then a new page will appear.
  • From that page, navigate to the left pane and then click on the ‘Office Account’ option. Now, go to the right side and click on the ‘Update Options’ combo box, to reveal the many options.
  • Out of those options on the drop-down list, tap on ‘Update now’ item. This action will look for any updates to the Outlook application.
  • If there is an update available, then those will be downloaded and installed automatically.
  • At last, once the Outlook application has been updated, next, restart the machine and see if this issue comes up or not.
