The League of Legends players recently came across a major issue that interrupted their gaming environment – Riot client patcher has stopped working. The Riot client patcher is also known as the PVP Patch Kernel. According to the user reports, when they try to start the game, the issue takes place in the form of an error message.
There are several reasons: running the game without admin permission, corrupted game execution files, malware-affected patch files, and many more. Furthermore, you might come across two other types of errors: The tm client has stopped working and League of Legends has stopped working. Don’t worry, these are all the same.
Before opting for the troubleshooting methods, ensure that your system is free from residual files. In addition to that, your internet connection must be active and stable to access the game’s multiplayer mode.
You can reboot/restart the game when you see that the Riot client patcher has stopped working – you can reboot/restart the game. First, try to close the game by clicking on the x icon. Navigate your mouse pointer to the taskbar if this doesn’t work. Open the Task Manager, and you will find the game League of Legends in alphabetical order. Click on End Task right next to it. Do the same for the Steam client (if installed). Close the Task Manager and refresh the File Explorer. After that, run the game and check whether the issue is recurring or not.
Follow the previous method to close the game and the gaming client. Hopefully, the game shortcut is present on the desktop. Right-click on the shortcut and run as administrator. If the Riot client patcher has stopped working, once again, then close the game, right-click on the shortcut and click on Properties. Select the Compatibility mode and run the Compatibility Troubleshooter. In addition to that, tick mark on the Compatibility mode and select the OS that you are using from the dropdown menu. Scroll down and tick the “run this program as an admin” checkbox.
If the Riot client patcher has stopped working, you can remove the existing patch files from the system drive. It seems that you are using the Steam client to play League of Legends. So, navigate to the Steam folder in the system drive. Access the sub-folders like steamapps, common and League of Legends. You will witness the RADS folder, open it and delete releasemanifest, S_OK. In addition to that, delete the logs and META-INF folders. Lastly, don’t forget to delete the files named lol. properties and lolClient.exe. Close the folders and try to run the game once again.
A corrupted game and its client can be a possible reason for the Riot client patcher has stopped working. So, let’s try to re-install the game first. Navigate to the Steam client and try to remove the game. If there is no option, close the client and open the list of installed programs. Search for the game; select Steam and uninstall it if you don’t find it. Restart the system to save the changes. After that, re-install the Steam client. This entire process will resolve the issue.
Malware can affect your data and the patch files as well. That is why the Riot client patcher has stopped working when you try to start the League of Legends. Close all the background applications along with the game and gaming client. Get a good anti-malware application and install it on your computer. Run a full system scan. If the app detects any malware, then remove it completely. If not, then your system might be affected by a virus. Repeat the same process with the help of anti-virus.
It seems that you haven’t cleared the cache files from the system; thus, the Riot client patcher has stopped working. Proceed towards the temporary folder and delete all the files. In addition to that, open the run search box and type “Prefetch”. The Prompt window will appear asking to apply the admin rights. Click on the Continue button, and find the list of files. Several ongoing applications are using these types of residual files. Select all and delete them, also close the window and run the game. Surely, you will be able to play without any errors.
